Investments? I am taking an investment class this semester. I need to make 500K in “phantom investments” into a program called Stock-Trak Simulation. 100K is allocated to a speculative portfolio and 400K is considered a permanent portfolio. In my permanent portfolio I need to buy 10 to 15 stocks from various industries and hold them to the end of semester (11/17/06). No more than 10 percent of the 400K can be from one industry. Does anyone have any recommendations for this breakup of the 10 to 15 stocks for this timeframe? Any website recommendation for research or advice?

What are the best investments during an economic depression? Not to be all doom and gloom, but in my opinion, the writing is on the wall regarding the economy, the real estate and financial markets, and I am extremely worried about the future. So what are the best investments during serious recessions or even depressions or hyperinflation? I'm not simply talking about securing/holding onto current value, but to take advantage of the situation. I.e., what were the best investments during the Great Depression? Gold? Other precious metals/natural resources?
What percentage of US households has investments in the stock market? Where can I find statistical data, from a reliable source, about how many households (I'm looking specifically for middle-class, but global stats would also do) have investments in the stock market?. I don't mean trust funds or other "indirect" investments but people actually buying and trading stocks.
What is the opitmal way to diversify my investments? I always hear people saying that diversifying your investments. I would like to know what exactly it means. I checked many places like wikipedia or the capital asset pricing model. None of them states clearly what exactly diversifying means in real practice.
I have some very conservative investments, mostly mutual funds. What will happen to them in a deep recession? I have some mutual funds which are made up of very conservative investments - nothing too risky. Over the past few decades this fund has done nothing but grow slowly. Sometimes it goes down a bit, sometimes it spikes a bit, but overall it shows a pattern of growth, which is great. What will happen to these investments if we go into a bad recession? Will they decrease in value a lot? Should I try and head this off by changing my portfolio? Or just ride it out? Thanks!
How can I even up the investments for my children? My son and daugther are 4.5 years apart in age. My son was the first grandchild and my grandmother showered him with various stocks and investments. By the time my daughter came along, there were too many great-grandchildren and Grandma couldn't keep up. I want to even my kids up, but my daughter shouldn't have the same amount as my son as she's younger. Is there some formula that I can use to determine how much my daughter should have compared to my son to insure that they're somewhat close in value when they take over the accounts when they're grown. Obviously, subject to market fluctuations. When I buy an investment now, I buy the same one for both, so that if one pick is good or bad, they're affected equally.
Is a loss from a personal loan the same tax category as a loss from stock investments? I loaned a friend some money several years ago to help start a business, and the business failed and I was not repaid for the loan. I also, the same year, had losses from other investments (in the stock market). My understanding is that I can only deduct $3000 in investment losses for that year. Is the personal loan in the same category as the other investments -- in other words, does it count as part of the $3000 limit? Or is there a way I can claim that loss separately? Thanks!
Why is there little investments into the Philippines despite its unique stregnths and resources? Why is there little investments into the Philippines despite its unique stregnths and resources? Look at Malaysia even vietnam is beating us in FDI inflows. Why is this so, when geographicaly we are at the gateway of east and south east asia we also serve as a bridge to the Americas. We have a liberal economy, english proficiency, young population and high education rate. Since we are smack in the middle of 4 economically dynamic regions, we have a diverse and versatile culture and posses high quality resources (Natural, Man-power and Intellectual) Why then do we pale in comparison to the rest of our kin? Where did we go wrong? What happened? indonesia is more corrupt than the philippines. yet they recieve more FDI's too.
what are the investment choices where I can avoid tax or atleast get least taxed on my investments ? I learned even mutual funds are taxed - so I'm seeking any investment opportunities or ways or chances where my money is save and yet can sort of avoid tax or at least get the most reduced tax on my investments. w_danko - thank you , I'll wait for more views Spock (rhp) and maximus 3ad - thank you , thank you so much !!! Should I sell some investments to make payments easier for a new mortgage? I am about to purchase a condo from someone in my family. They are selling it to me for 78% of the appraised value so that I do not have to pay mortgage insurance. So, even if I sold it the day after I bought it, I could potentially make about 50,000. I am certain that my boyfriend and I will be able to make the mortgage payments on the house, but it will be tight. I have some money in investments, I was planning on not using any of the money until retirement, but should I use some of the investment money to go towards the home purchase so I don't have to pay so much in the loan? Or should I just take out a certain amount, say $1,000 to have in a quick cushion account, in case I need to use 1 or $200 to help pay for mortgage? Over the past 12 years I have been getting a 12% return on my investments, which is GREAT. I'm not sure I will get anything close to this by putting the money into this house, except for the fact that I am getting the place for 78% of the apprised value. Thoughts?
10K gift to reduce taxes from investments for non-working parents? So my parents don't work & got some cash stocked away in hi-yeld interest accounts. They made about 30K on their investments last year in interest income. What is the best way to reduce their taxes? Is giving 10K to their grandchild going to have an effect on their taxible income?
What are the federal income tax rates on investments? What are the federal income tax rates? I'm talking about investments. I heard there's one tax rates on savings account, a different tax rate on short term capital gains, a different tax rate on long term capital gains, another tax rate on dividends, and so on. Is there a chart somewhere that shows these rates so I can consider tax consequences of how I invest my money?
What are the worst investments and spendings? Ok, so we know what are good investments, stock, housing, mutual funds, retirement. But where does most of our money go wasted? After eating and renting and gas, where do you see yourself, or most Americans waste money on? Books? Movies? Junk food? Education they didn't need? Travel? Timeshares? Certain bills? Excessive taxes? I'm asking for two reasons, if I can know what people waste money on, I can avoid them. Secondly, if I can know what's profitable and people are stupid enough to buy, why would I let it pass me? Yes, I know "waste" is subject, but I think most people once in debt and need of money, would agree (in 20/20 hindsight) that lots of luxuries such as pets, cars, books, tipping waiters, eating out are things they 'wasted' and probably better spent if they saved it and prepared for times of unemployment or pay cuts. Also, we have every right to say people are wasteful or stupid just a they have every right to ignore our opinion. Luckily from environments like these, we can remain anonymous and just tell stories (maybe even some fake ones) that can be advice or lesson to others.
What kind of investments is this? How do I start investing like this? A friend of mine was describing how he makes money doing investments a certain way. He said that he put some money in some account or something, and people will go somewhere and apply for some sort of loan. The financial place calls him up and tells him who is applying and what they are applying for and all that. He makes the decision on whether or not the loan should go through or not. He said that financial institution tells him how much of a risk the applicant is. What kind of investing is this, and how would someone start doing that? What companies do I look for and so on.
How do mutual fund investments affect my taxes? Do I need to claim the interest earned from the fund in my income taxes if my investments don't exceed a specific amount? Additional factors include the following: I'm an American living in Thailand, earning Thai baht. I'm not on a work permit so therefor I'm "off the books" so to speak.
When you have maxed out your 401K and Roth IRA, what other long term investments should you consider? My fiance and I are both 25, have dependable high paying jobs, and are already home owners. Neither of us have school loans, credit card debt or other outstanding debt with the exception of one car payment. I'm wondering where we should look to invest our money in the coming years as I'd like more return on investment than my current money market account is offering. What other long term, moderate risk investments should we consider?
What time of investments should I look into making? I'm 21, soon graduating from college, and am interested in diving into some investments. I already have a Roth IRA, but am curious as to what other ideas I should consider (i.e. bond funds, growth v. value). I know the very basics of investing but not enough to feel comfortable to jump right in. Any investment advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance.
How much $$$ should you keep in your checking/savings account before putting the rest in investments, stocks? Do you know what is approximately a normal amount of money to have in your savings/checking account? I think lots of people don't like to keep much cash available in a savings/checking account -- instead they prefer to put it in investments like stocks, bonds, mutual funds, retirement plans, etc. But you still have to have some spending money available, of course, so I was wondering what's an average amount to have? Do you have any idea?

Best Investments with Little Money to Start? With a volatile and nervous stock market, as of January 26th, 2008 ; where can I find excellent returns over the long term ? I have done some research into the alternative energy fields and I am very interested in investing into solar, wind power, nuclear, thermal energy fields. What companies are the in the alternative energy fields that would be a good investment in small caps, emerging alternative energy companies with strong earning potential on your investments ? I have only about $ 1500.00 to start with. Should I look at penny stocks in the alternative energy fields ? I am close to retirement with about 3 more years to retirement at 65 and would be very interested in earning a steady retirement income that I can build in the next few years from investments in the alternative energy fields. Some investment experts say that the alternative energy markets will explode to 10 times larger than the Internet in the comming years with great investment returns IF you get in now. By the way...I do not want to fully retire at age 65. I will most likely work part time as I want to keep busy. I am not poor. I am not rich. I will have plenty of money to retire with as I plan to retire in Mexico. When I say I have $ 1500.00 to invest , that is only what I want to to invest into the alternative energy field at this time. Please recommend specific compaines that I can research. Please provide web sites and good information not " good luck " to the old guy notes.

Best way to invest a few thousand dollars in medium-risk investments? I have next to zero experience in investing, since I am just out of high school. I have around 2000-4000 dollars I am willing to invest in medium-risk investments. Although I've done a bit of research myself, I'd like to get a rundown of what is safe yet shows good growth. I know high-risk would involve small-cap "penny" stocks, while for a safer bet there are Mutual Funds. Yet my cash is limited, and I'm not willing to do anything risky, such as margin accounts for stocks. Can anyone please explain what I should really do with my money for the best growth?
